Why Healing Isn’t Always a Straight Line
One of the most common frustrations I hear from patients is: “I was feeling so good… and then everything flared up again.”
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone- and more importantly, it doesn’t mean your treatment isn’t working.
The Myth of Linear Healing
Many people expect recovery to look like a straight, upward line: each week a little better than the last. In reality, pain and healing are rarely that predictable.
More often, progress looks like a general upward trend over time, with small dips, plateaus, and occasional setbacks along the way. You might feel amazing one week, notice a flare the next, and then gradually improve again.
This isn’t failure. It’s normal.
Why Setbacks Happen
Flare-ups don’t always mean something has gone “wrong”, and it’s important to remember that an increase in pain does not necessarily mean you’ve made an injury worse (check out our blog post for more information on why pain does not equal damage). Pain flare-ups are often influenced by everyday factors such as:
- Increased stress or busy periods
- Poor sleep or fatigue
- Changes in routine or activity levels
- Alcohol or more inflammatory food choices (check out our blog post for more information on these)
- Doing more because you finally felt good again
Sometimes, these moments actually help you learn more about your body: what it tolerates well, what needs more support, and where your limits currently sit.
Progress Is Still Progress
Even when healing feels messy, the overall direction is usually upwards. You may notice:
- Shorter or less intense flare-ups
- Faster recovery after setbacks
- A better understanding of your triggers
- Improved resilience and confidence in your body
That growing awareness is a huge part of long-term recovery.
A More Realistic Way to View Healing
Instead of asking, “Why am I not better yet?”, a more helpful question can be:
“Am I trending in the right direction over time?”
Healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency, patience, and supporting your body through its natural ups and downs.
